As a dancer, I have a BFA from Purchase College Dance Conservatory in New York and have enjoyed performing in site-specific works with local companies such as the Arts Fission Company and EcNad as well as working with the choreographer Tammy Wong and theatre director Jeffrey Tan. As an arts manager, I was Head of the People’s Association Culture Department overseeing the arts and culture courses at about 100 community centres throughout Singapore as well as the production of the annual Chingay Parade. Subsequently, I received a full scholarship to pursue a MA in Arts Management from City University, London. Upon completion of my studies, I joined the Esplanade Theatre’s pioneering management team.
I have also been an educator in the field of Arts Management since 1997. I wrote the curriculum and taught the Specialist Diploma in Arts and Events Management at Temasek Polytechnic. I was also instrumental in creating the BA (Hons) and MA Arts and Cultural Management degree programmes for LASALLE College of the Arts, Singapore and led the academic team through successful validations with Goldsmiths College, University of London. In 2012, I set up the Asia Pacific Network for Cultural Education and Research.
I obtained my PhD (Business Management) from the University of South Australia. My thesis is based on a perception study of stakeholders’ influence regarding the artistic programmes of ballet and contemporary dance companies. Today, I split my time playing different roles as mother (of Lizzie and Mani), daughter, wife, educator, and college administrator.Advice for Students
