What is counselling?

The Counselling Service is here to help you gain understanding and insight into difficulties you may be experiencing, to develop emotional resilience and put into effect real change, enabling you to fulfil your academic and personal potential. The Service offers free and confidential support.

Do I need to see a counsellor?

Many people sort out problems by talking to friends, family or staff in their College or Department. For others it is a matter of looking up information about things that concern them, and we have a large section of self-help information on this website. But there are times when this isn’t enough and it makes sense to come to the Counselling Service.

Is everything I share confidential?

Yes, everything in the counselling session is confidential and will not be shared with anyone except under the following conditions: (1) perceived risks to commit serious harm to yourself or other; (2) information indicating the abuse of children; (3) valuable information during a medical emergency; (4) an order from the court to disclose information.

How many sessions will I need?

Counselling is a process whereby through conversation, questioning by your Therapist, you will be able to come to a decision or solution for your situation. As each person’s situation is unique, it is not possible to give a blanket statement about the number of session. Usually the first session is time for the Therapist to get to know you, your situation, and your goals. By the end of the first session, your Therapist will be better able to give you a treatment plan and estimation of the number of sessions. It is unlikely for it to be a once off treatment.

Will my therapist give me advise or tell me what to do?

Therapists are professionally and ethically not allowed to give advice or make decision for clients. The role of a Therapist is to ask questions in order to help clients to have new perspectives and insights in order to come to a different place or solution for your situation.

How can I go about selecting my therapist?

You check out the therapists’ bio for a description of their background and approaches. You would want to be able to come during most of the therapist’s hours since you might not be able to get the exact time you want. Counselling is about fitting the client’s personality with the therapist’s personality and approach.

Why do I have to see the same therapist? Why can’t I see different therapists as need be? Can I see 2 therapists at the same time?

Ethically, it is not appropriate for therapists to treat a person for individual therapy while they are being treated individually by another therapist without their knowledge. It can compromise the treatment plan of both therapists and could exacerbate the symptoms that brought the client into therapy. In therapy it is also believed that the relationship between the client and the therapist itself is healing and therefore putting effort in with one therapist is the best road to recovery. The client will need to decide which therapist is most compatible and meets needs and goals.

The exceptions to the rule include one-time initial interviews while trying to decide. It is perfectly acceptable to see more than one therapist on a one-time basis to find the best fit (though interviewing too many can cause confusion). Also, at times it is advisable to see two different therapists for different purposes, as long as both therapists are informed.

Can I just walk in?
